I did not have a good night last night: straps, wires, and tubes are not conducive to sleep. Last night was my night for the sleep apnea test; they give you a gadget to wear that straps on and includes two strain-gauge bands, a tube going up to your nose, and an oxymetry sensor that clips onto a finger. They really prefer 5 hours worth of sensing; they'll be lucky if they got four. I think I finally got to sleep around 2:30, after taking a flexeril at 2:00. After trying the couch -- the [livejournal.com profile] flower_cat was wakeful for different reasons.

Tried adding niacin and B12 supplements to my daily pill salad. The recent tests for those were in the normal range, but I figure it's worth seeing whether they help the neuropathy and triglycerides anyway. I'd forgotten about the facial flushing effect from niacin -- impressive.

Y'know, I probably shouldn't post these two headlines together, but I couldn't resist.

6 Die From Brain-Eating Amoeba in Lakes

It sounds like science fiction but it's true: A killer amoeba living in lakes enters the body through the nose and attacks the brain where it feeds until you die.

Night of the Living Vista

Today, I think of Vista as the zombie operating system. It stumbles around, and from a distance you might think it's alive, but close up it's the walking dead.

U.S. judge says Novell owns UNIX copyrights| Reuters
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 10 (Reuters) - A U.S. court ruled on Friday that Novell Inc. owns copyrights to the UNIX computer operating system, a blow to SCO Group's claim to the technology that also jeopardizes a related SCO lawsuit against IBM .

"The court concludes that Novell is the owner of the UNIX and UnixWare copyrights," Judge Dale Kimball of the U.S. District Court for Utah said in the ruling.

He also ruled that Novell could force SCO to drop claims against IBM in a case crucial to the future of the cooperatively developed Linux operating system.

Novell "is entitled, at its sole discretion, to direct SCO to waive" its claim against IBM, the judge wrote.
I'd point to more details on Groklaw, but the net is wonky at the moment.

update: Groklaw's back. And it seems that they owe Novell big $$ for the licenses they "sold" to Microsoft and Sun. There may be a few loose ends, but basically SCOX goes back to being a "caldera". Literally, this time.

See this song for details.

From the BBC, no less, we get the headline FBI tries to fight zombie hordes!

Of course, it's about networks of hijacked computers, not yesterday's silliness. But the timing! (From [livejournal.com profile] wcg.)

'Zombies' file lawsuit against city of Mpls.

A group of zombies have risen up to claim the city of Minneapolis and Hennepin County violated their free rights and discriminated against them.

The six adults and one juvenile who were arrested while impersonating the undead in July filed their lawsuit Thursday.

The ragged group were arrested for "simulating weapons of mass destruction" during a dance party near the Minneapolis entertainment district.

Police alleged that wires protruding from the zombie's backpacks could have been bombs or were meant to imitate bombs. It was later learned the wires were actually radios.

...at this post, which is mostly uninteresting but ends with an extended discussion of the advantages of text messaging in the event of a zombie attack.
Consider this, you're at the park and suddenly there's a zombie outbreak. You're surrounded. What do you do? Call 911? Yeah, like they'll believe you. Under normal circumstances, you'd probably be turned into a zombie by now, but luckily for you, you've got TxtLJ.

Just whip out your phone and text, "postcomm.zombiekillers Umm...help, zombies are attacking me at the park" to TxtLJ (89855).

That'll post your message to the [livejournal.com profile] zombiekillers and you'll be rescued in no time*.

*TxtLJ should not be relied on in a zombie attack.
