I finally managed to get in a quick dash through the art show, about 20 minutes' worth, getting out about 10 minutes before the madness of closing. The 3-d section was extensive, and wonderful.

Compared to other filk-intensive cons, I've spent more time in the filk lounge and much less time in open circles. Before Friday that was a matter of trying to save my voice; Saturday it was mostly a matter of getting squeezed between the last concert and theme circle, and needing to get to bed so as not to be sleepy on the drive home.

We left about 12:15 after a very smooth load-out, and arrived in San Jose pretty close 8 hours later. Had dinner in an Applebee's in Camarillo.

Recording note: my recording equipment for my concert was a Griffin iMic and a Griffin stereo lapel mic plugged into my (actually Ricoh's) Macbook Pro. (added the mic was clipped on to a button that I pinned to the back of a front-row seat. The screen was visible from the stage, which was mildly distracting.) I used Audacity, of course. The Mac laptop by itself was totally inadequate as an editing platform, so I don't have it trimmed or split yet. Gave a couple of people a mostly-raw .wav file in exchange for a $5 donation to Interfilk. I'm still in the process of figuring out how I will eventually distribute concert recordings. Suggestions welcome.

Now that I'm back at home with all my software, here's the official setlist for my concert Friday night:

Set list: Worldcon-2006

1. Cicero in the Twenty First Century
2. House Carpenter
3. Demon Lover
4. Silk and Steel
5. Ship of Stone
6. The World Inside the Crystal
7. Guilty Pleasures

I thought it went pretty well; fortunately, the audience never seems to notice the times when I lose track of the chords (usually around the second or third verse). Really need chords on all the verses of the songs I have trouble with.

My gig, with Joyce Uggla assisting on vocals, guitar, and percussion, went very well. Ended up dropping "Someplace in the Net" in order to squeeze in "Guilty Pleasures" at the end -- the fact that Joyce is a folkdancer and the song is in 7/8 had a lot to do with it. A couple of my usual chord flubs, but I don't think anyone in the audience noticed. Got some favorable responses; I think having backup realy helps.

Went to the Pegasus nominees concert; I seem to have two Pegasus nominees in my repertoire, "Close Your Eyes" by Dan Glasser, and "Ship of Stone" by Don Simpson. Fortunately they're in different categories. There will be some tough decisions, as usual.

I've been busy this con -- seven program items (all in the filk track, but still...). Haven't even been to the art show yet. My throat is actually in pretty good shape, thanks to good drugs, tea, ginger tea, and lots of water.

Breakfast in the Executive Lounge (we paid for one night with Hilton Honors points -- that got us onto the concierge floor). Dave and Joyce were there -- they drove down overnight. Insane, but probably no more so than the rest of us.

Did a fair amount of singing yesterday, with a kids' concert and the computer-song theme circle back to back in the afternoon. Then probably more singing than I should have done in the filk lounge. Woke up with a very dry throat, but not scratchy thanks to benedryl and a variety of other drugs, plus lots of ginger tea yesterday. (Yay for ginger tea: put a couple of slices of ginger into a cup of hot water. Add honey to taste. Yummy, and good for the throat.)

Two theme circles and my concert today -- I'm planning to stay properly hydrated, and should get through it if I'm careful.

The [livejournal.com profile] flower_cat was attacked by a large plush dragon in the dealers' room. By the time I spotted her it was much too late to rescue her, but after what I've spent on CDs and what she hasn't spent on jewelry, I was in no position to complain.

Well, we made it! The drive down, via US101, was just the way I like it: scenic, and totally uneventful. About 7:30 including a break for an early dinner in Buellton.

Slept badly, and may be coming down with a cold. Will have to take good care of what's left of my voice.

I now have my badge (with my schedule printed on the back). The filk lounge is set up. All the filk programming is along one corridor on the 4th floor of the Hilton, so that's easy and convenient. The Hilton, where we're staying, is adjacent to the convention center where most of the rest of the con is happening. Concert Friday at 8pm.

The bags, boxes, crates, and ice chest are packed. The dishes from last night and this morning are being washed. The Y.D. is still at her high school freshman orientation; she'll get out at 11 or so. We'll have lunch, load the car, and should be on the road by noonish.

My first program item, the theme circle on found filk, is tomorrow at 5:30pm, giving me plenty of time to track down my badge (which might be either at reg or the green room).

This came from the lists at www.taupro.com/static/worldcon/, as published by [livejournal.com profile] xanalogica in this post. It's a great resource, and available as a downloadable zip file.

Spent last Tuesday at the trade-show section of Linuxworld. Nothing really new, but there were a few developments that pleased me greatly (not even counting the fact that Microsoft wasn't there):

  1. HP was showing a couple of "thin client" machines running Debian. They're based on Mini-ITX boards and AMD Geode CPUs. The larger one (to be released sometime next month) has an option for a PCI expansion card. Can you say "recording"? Unlike thin clients from Wyse, etc., they have enough onboard flash to hold a reasonable number of local applications. This is the future of "thin" clients, folks: machines that get information from the Web, but do most of the processing locally. Why wait for Firefox or OpenOffice to load through a knothole when you can load them from flash? Disk and CPU are cheap; bandwidth is expensive. And it's Debian, not some commercial distro.
  2. Three manufacturers shipping Linux on laptops. One was Lenovo (heir to IBM's Thinkpad line); they only ship to large customers at the moment. But it runs on all their machines!
  3. Creative Commons was there. I dropped off my card.

Saturday, I spent the afternoon at the 15th Anniversary Linux Picnic. Went by myself, since the [livejournal.com profile] flower_cat and [livejournal.com profile] chaoswolf had to go to the Baycon picnic, and [livejournal.com profile] super_star_girl wanted to sleep in (she starts High School on August 28th). The food arrived late, and the ice cream even later, but it was the usual crowd of happy, friendly geeks, so nobody minded.

Monday, Friday and Saturday night had practice sessions with Joyce. Mostly just working on the concert set, though last night I tossed "Guilty Pleasures" into the mix to see how it would sound with drum. Sounds good. Joyce is a folkdancer; songs in 5/4 and 7/8 don't faze her a bit.

We're heading down to Worldcon Tuesday as soon as the Y.D. gets done with her freshman orientation. Hopefully the flap over whether filk program participants are real "Program Participants" will have been cleared up by the time I go to the Green Room looking for my badge.

Party at our house next Saturday. The usual potluck bash. Filking is highly probable.

We're going to be at Westercon in San Diego, July 1-4. We'll be spending an additional day or two in the area, since it's impossible to visit San Diego and not go to the Zoo.

I'm going to be in Portland for OSCON, the O'Reilly Open Source Convention, from Tuesday, July 25 to Saturday, July 29. I'll try to arrive sometime in the early afternoon Tuesday, and leave Saturday afternoon or evening (I'd stay all day Saturday, but we have Lamplighters tickets for Sunday). The keynote is Tuesday evening and the last bit of programming ends just after noon on Friday. (Waves to [livejournal.com profile] cflute and [livejournal.com profile] randwolf.)

... and we'll be going to Worldcon August 23-27 in Los Angeles.

Interesting how things work out this year. The Younger Daughter is changing schools and school districts (long story -- I'll get to it in another post). In the San Jose district, she would have had summer school starting July 5th, and started high school the week before Worldcon. Now, she re-starts 8th grade (in a district that apparently gives a damn -- this is not a bad thing) the week after Labor Day. School will get out in the middle of July next year, which would normally destroy our travel plans for Westercon, but Westercon is in San Jose next year. Travel time about 10 minutes.
